Erickson Performing Arts Center

Curtis, Michigan

To improve its performance production capacity and visitor experience, the Erickson Center for the Arts engaged JDD to create concept designs for a new theater building for concerts, plays, and other community uses.

JDD’s design nestles into the wooded environment of the site creating an immersive experience for theater goers and performers alike. The building blends into the tree canopy using perforated oxidized copper panels, while the base of the building has operable glass walls permitting views and opening up of the venue to the outdoors. Support and technology spaces are consolidated, and a recessed floor area filled with adjustable stage risers affords complete flexibility of staging and seating arrangements; from flat floor, to proscenium, to in-the-round, among others.
